Sceau Rogue
Sceau Rogue
This shirt is made from an antique French linen, woven between 1900 and 1920, and originally marked with a small red asterisk - an old tradition used to identify a family’s linens or designate them within a household. These hand-stitched marks were a way to claim identity through cloth, especially in trousseau and daily domestic life. I removed the original asterisk from the fabric and re-stitched it onto the back of the shirt - a modern gesture that preserves the mark’s intent while making it my own. The result is a clean, understated piece that connects past and present through utility, memory, and personal meaning. Sceau Rouge honors the linen’s origin and reminds us how even the smallest symbols can carry a legacy. The name, French for “Red Seal,” reflects this mark as a stamp of identity and authenticity passed through time. The wearer of this piece bears a responsibility of sharing the story of this historic, personal textile in their own unique way. I’d like to think whoever wove the red asterisk into is smiling down, eager to see where their legacy goes next.
