This shirt is constructed from an early 1900s handwoven linen made of flax fibers, sourced from southern France. The fabric was dyed with natural indigo using a vat-dyeing process, where repeated dips created its deep blue tone. Because looms at the time were narrow (typically under 90 cm wide), the original textile is made from two panels carefully hand-sewn together to form a wider surface—this seam is still visible. The embroidered initials “MD” indicate it was part of a trousseau, likely made by or for a bride, and serve as a personal monogram. The textile combines pre-industrial weaving, traditional dyeing, and domestic embroidery, making the shirt both historically significant and materially rich.
Made with intention, worn with pride.
